The road to the top of Haleakala has much to offer the traveler. It winds through the variousmicroclimates. Vegetation and colors change with the elevation. Artists and those whoappreciate scenic beauty find much to enjoy here. You'll find us stopping along theway to gaze and admire, picnic or paint. At one point on the road just below the Kula Lodge at the right time of year, you will pass though a gauntlet of jacaranda trees in full bloom. I affectionatelycall this area Lavender Passage.

Into the Clouds was painted on a private ranch road located mauka of Po'okela Church above the town of Makawao. Located below the outdoor polo grounds, (indoor has a fence around it) there are typically cows or horses grazing the area. The backdrop of majestic Haleakala towering in the east becomes almost like water to fish, hardly noticed, as the residents go about their busy days. This painting captures a day in 1989 in the life of artist Curtis Wilson Cost, who's appreciation of such things compelled him to do so.

According to Jill Cost's studio records, Lunch in Ulupalakua has been in the same private collection from the day it was painted. It has now become available as an estate sale. Painted in 1985, in it you can see the foreshadowing of many works to come from Mr Cost with its use of light spilling across the middle ground, a compositional device leading the eye through the center of interest. Looking at later works, you can see how these early indications of a strong light source would emerge and become a prominent feature of Curtis Wilson Cost. Many other important paintings to come decades later will employ this signature element. What makes this particular painting a rarity is the gathering of horses lunching in the shade. Horses seldom appear in Cost's work. This piece stands shoulder to shoulder with Cost's most recognizable pieces of Hawaiian fine art esthetics. It is a significant and important piece in a career that helped to shape an era of art both in Hawaii and on the mainland.

Occasionally my work is done completely from memory. Beach Morning Glory is one of those pieces. After spending the day wandering the beaches in Maalaea, I came home and painted this piece. It’s a recollection of my day strolling the ins and outs around Sugar Beach with a background of the west Maui mountains reaching towards McGregor Point. It is one of those turns along the sand that could easily pass for rural if you capture it just right. I always draw inspiration from quick glimpses that evoke the tranquility of remoteness; a sandy stretch framed by the vegetation leaning over the turquoise. It jumps up in front of me and demands to be painted. It is the story of my life. -CWC
